What is Project Tango?
Project Tango is a proposed large-scale artificial intelligence data center planned for 202 acres in Loxahatchee, Florida, north of Southern Boulevard and west of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. The development could reach up to 3.7 million square feet, making it one of the largest AI data center proposals in the region.
Some Issues Around Mega AI Data Centers:
Energy and Water – Because of the large concentration of computers, huge amounts of energy and water are needed to cool the computers and facilities. No data is readily available for this particular facility, but we can look at others built or being constructed to get a ballpark number.
For Comparison – Richland Parish, Louisiana has a 4 million sq ft mega data center under construction. The facility will use more electricity than the entire city of New Orleans, potentially three times the usage. And it uses 23 million gallons of water a day.
Habitat and Wildlife Concerns – The site is adjacent to protected wildlife areas, agricultural lands, and equestrian properties. Development at this scale could disrupt wildlife corridors, increase habitat loss, and alter nearby ecosystems. Light, noise, and continuous industrial activity may affect sensitive species.
Pollution & Contamination – Project Tango’s large-scale operations could harm local air, water, and land quality. Pollution from construction, energy use, and waste management risks contaminating ecosystems and impacting public health.
Noise Pollution – Residents report fears of constant low-frequency hums from cooling systems, diesel generators (though developers deny plans for them), and mechanical operations.
Regulatory and Transparency Gaps – The project was originally approved in 2016 as a standard data center, not an AI facility. The recent expansion request and shift to AI use have exposed outdated zoning codes. Residents and officials argue that the project should be re-evaluated as a high-impact AI center, not a routine industrial development.
Consumer and Taxpayer Costs – Infrastructure upgrades needed to supply energy and water may result in higher utility costs for existing customers. Much or all of these costs will be passed on to existing customers. Meanwhile, large data center projects are often given tax breaks and reduced utility rates.
Job Creation – A selling point used for these facilities is that they create jobs. Long-term employment at completed facilities is typically limited. Short-term population increases during construction can strain housing, traffic, and local services.
